Neurodivergent Young Adults
Client Profile
‘Neurodivergent’ is a nonmedical umbrella term describing individuals whose brain development and expression differ from what is considered ‘typical.’ As a result, neurodivergent minds possess unique strengths and challenges compared to brains society deems conventional. The term ‘neurodivergent’ can apply to individuals with an established ICD-10 or DSM-V medical diagnosis, as well as to those whose experiences occur without a medical diagnosis or condition.
Finding appropriate support for neurodivergent young adults in a neurotypical world can be a challenge.
A young adult who identifies as neurodivergent experiences unique obstacles on their journey to independence. Our neuro-affirming program is here to support them while they are navigating identity exploration, individual growth, and fostering healthy relationships.
Our approach employs:
Collaborative assessment of what has been working and what has not been working
Careful attunement to the client and family’s personal experience
Thoughtful design of treatment plans predicated on sound conceptualization
Intentional and respectful enactment of evidence-based interventions customized to the specific client’s needs
A truly supportive environment aims at helping to navigate and thrive in various aspects of life, including education, employment, social interactions, and daily activities.
Neurodivergent support can be essential for empowering individuals in discovering their effectiveness. The right environment fosters inclusivity, as well as creates a more accepting community. These environments recognize and value the strengths and abilities of neurodivergent individuals while also respectfully addressing the challenges they may face.
We have found that while traditional talk therapy is an important part of treatment, neurodivergent young adults often benefit from a wider range of support. Our approach combines individual, group, and family therapy with experiential therapies, life skills coaching, executive functioning support, academic success coaching, and practical skill development. Treatment extends into everyday life through support with activities of daily living, social and relationship coaching, job readiness training, and academic oversight. Within the therapeutic milieu, clients receive real-time feedback, support with navigating interpersonal challenges, deepening relationships, and exposure-based work that builds confidence and resilience. We also help clients better understand their own neurodivergent profile through psychoeducation and perspective taking. Concurrently, we work closely with families to address patterns of accommodation and dependency and strengthen communication. Throughout the process, we remain sensitive to each individual's sensory, emotional, cognitive, and physical experience, ensuring that growth occurs in a safe and supportive environment.
Our clients build connections in the community at large. We facilitate client engagement in authentic and sustainable social outlets so they can build out a living network of friendships and resources.
A core part of our work involves helping clients engage with the greater Portland community through social groups, volunteer opportunities, recreational activities, educational programs, employment settings, and other interest-based outlets.
